When upon one morning's light
After the dark embrace of sleepy night,
I awoke to day's enticing hand
Beckoning me to rise from sleep to stand:
I hastened thence to yonder bathroom cold
To groom myself as cleanliness hold.
Whereupon I found my hairbrush missing
Lost probably to the girl that I'd been kissing,
For she had been in this room the night before
Attending to her hair like some decor:
I let her be for it was quite boring
Watching her groom from dusk till morning.
But alas she left me lonely after love making
And abandoned my flesh after the lust was but waking,
So that the only solace I could find was in sleep
Where in dreams her beauty I could still keep:
In fantasies far detached from earth and air,
In worlds far away -- we made love there.
Oh woe is me for my hairbrush be missing
Lost to me buy the angel I was kissing.
Had she taken some other thing I would not mind
For I could purchase another of any other kind:
But no, the trickster had to take my prize,
She had to have done it out of mischief, I surmise.
Quickly to the den did I adjourn
And gave my old rotary phone a couple of turns.
My reward came from a couple of telephone rings
Then a message, then a beep -- blasted thing!
Well what else had I but to leave a note
And ask her to return my hairbrush -- at least some hope.
"Hello, it's Kai, from last night.
The guy you met after the bar-room fight.
Well, it seems that after yesterday,
You weren't very pleased and ran away.
That's ok, but let me ask:
If you have my hairbrush, give it back!"
A week there passed and not a peep
Though I left message after message following every beep.
Until one night after yet another bar-room brawl,
I returned home to discover I'd missed a call.
The voice on the machine was familiar -- it was she
And she left me a message with a notable tone of plea.
"Kai, this is the girl from the bar.
I'd love to bring you your hairbrush but I live too far.
Plus, you need to understand
It wasn't cuz you weren't good that I ran:
I just came home with you after the fight
Hoping you had a hairbrush -- I had a date that night.
As you can imagine, I couldn't go that way,
With my hair in tangles and flying astray.
So I paid for your brush with the love we made,
Gained your hairbrush in the bed we laid.
In any case I must now disconnect,
So goodbye and please forget."
I couldn't believe the message I'd heard,
It left me searching for breath and word.
I was stunned by the magnitude of it all,
I mean, there were loads of hairbrushes at the mall!
Why didn't she just make a quick trip there
And get a brush to groom her hair?
I went out and bought a new brush the day after
And found within myself a bit of sarcastic laughter.
For my hair was now in quite a disarray, as you can imagine,
So much so that those who heard my tale showed me compassion.
At last I got home and with one final glare,
Ripped up her phone number and said:
"Ha! Now I can brush my hair!"
